Het Bestuursorgaan van Anima Eterna Brugge beëindigt de samenwerking met haar oprichter-dirigent en bouwt verder aan de vernieuwing van het orkest.
Het Bestuursorgaan van Anima Eterna vzw heeft vandaag de samenwerking met haar oprichter-dirigent, Jos van Immerseel, beëindigd. Anima Eterna werd opgericht in 1987 en verdiept zich reeds decennia in historische uitvoeringspraktijken.
Jos van Immerseel heeft de waarden die hij al jaren met Anima Eterna deelt herhaaldelijk naast zich neergelegd. Na tal van vruchteloze pogingen om Jos van Immerseel in staat te stellen zijn verhaal met het orkest voort te zetten en zijn kennis en knowhow door te geven in een geest van respect, ziet het bestuursorgaan spijtig genoeg geen andere uitweg dan het beëindigen van de werkrelatie vanwege aanhoudend agressief gedrag en regelmatige inbreuken op de contractuele verplichtingen. Na samen met het bestuur de artistieke ontwikkeling van Anima Eterna te hebben onderschreven en ondersteund, neemt hij er nu afstand van. Wat de meningsverschillen vandaag ook mogen zijn, ze kunnen een dergelijk gedrag niet rechtvaardigen. Deze breuk markeert het einde van de overgangsperiode die meer dan vijf jaar geleden begon met het akkoord van Jos van Immerseel. Op dat moment besloot hij de teugels geleidelijk over te dragen en het orkest open te stellen voor andere dirigenten en projecten die de toekomst van het orkest en de overdracht van kennis en ervaring aan een nieuwe generatie konden verzekeren.
De muzikale invloed van Jos van Immerseel op de historisch geïnformeerde muziekpraktijk is aanzienlijk. Als een ware pionier in de herontdekking van het romantische repertoire tot het begin van de twintigste eeuw op historische instrumenten, heeft Jos van Immerseel Anima Eterna en zijn musici in staat gesteld om tot de toonaangevende ensembles in Europa en de wereld te behoren. Het orkest is trots en erkentelijk voor het immense werk dat onder zijn muzikale leiding gedurende bijna 40 jaar is bereikt, zoals blijkt uit de vele bekroonde concerten en opnames.
Anima Eterna blijft zich verder hervormen rondom haar musici en gastdirigenten. Zij werken al een aantal jaren samen aan projecten met een moderne artistieke en maatschappelijke visie die de toekomst van het orkest veilig stelt en de rijke erfenis aan een nieuwe generatie muzikanten en publiek doorgeeft. Het verdere verloop hiervan wordt binnenkort toegelicht. Anima Eterna bouwt verder op haar historische waarden: artistieke uitmuntendheid, kennisdeling, de centrale rol van onderzoek en de voortdurende bevraging van bronnen en praktijken wars van dogma’s. Anima Eterna spreekt zich in haar artistiek leiderschap ook uit vóór inclusiviteit, diversiteit en een onberispelijke gedragsethiek.
Over een paar dagen zullen Anima Eterna Brugge en Pablo Heras-Casado, één van haar gastdirigenten, de originele versie van de 3e symfonie van Bruckner uitvoeren, evenals werken van Wagner en Mahler in Besançon, Linz, Brugge, Lyon, Barcelona en San Sebastian. Anima Eterna nodigt u uit om de nieuwste opname van Bruckners 4e symfonie onder leiding van Pablo Heras-Casado te ontdekken, uitgebracht door Harmonia Mundi op 13 september.

The Board of Directors of Anima Eterna Ends Collaboration with its Historic Conductor and Opens a New Phase of the Orchestra’s Renewal.
The Board of Directors of Anima Eterna, an orchestra performing on period instruments founded in 1987, has decided to end its collaboration with its historic conductor, Jos van Immerseel, effective from September 16, 2024.
Despite several unsuccessful attempts to allow Jos van Immerseel to continue his journey with the Orchestra and pass on his knowledge and expertise in a spirit of respect for everyone, the Board has decided to end this working relationship due to repeated aggressive behavior and ongoing breaches of his contractual obligations. After having jointly led the artistic development of Anima alongside the Board of Directors, Jos van Immerseel is now stepping away. Regardless of any disagreements, such moral and professional conduct cannot be justified. The Board of Directors of Anima Eterna is deeply committed to upholding the values of respect and dignity in the organization’s operations.
This separation marks the end of the transition period that began more than five years ago with the agreement of Jos van Immerseel. At that time, he had decided to gradually step back, opening the orchestra to other musical directors and collaborative projects capable of securing the future of the Orchestra and passing on knowledge and experience to a new generation.
Jos van Immerseel’s musical influence on historically informed performance remains considerable. A true pioneer in the rediscovery of Romantic repertoires up to the early 20th century on period instruments, Jos van Immerseel helped Anima Eterna and its musicians become one of the most recognized ensembles in Europe and around the world. The Orchestra is proud and grateful for the immense work accomplished under his musical direction for nearly 40 years, as demonstrated by the numerous concerts, award-winning recordings, and the legacy that Anima Eterna intends to carry forward.
Anima Eterna is undergoing a renewal, focusing on its musicians and the music directors who have been united for five years around collaborative projects, with a new artistic and civic vision that ensures the Orchestra’s future and the transmission of its legacy, knowledge, and experience to a new generation.
This new artistic and civic project, soon to be unveiled, is driven by essential values: long-standing ones such as artistic excellence, the sharing of knowledge, the central role of research, and a continuous questioning of sources and practices far from dogmatism; but also by values defining a 21st-century orchestra and its artistic leadership, including inclusivity, diversity, a focus on youth, and impeccable ethical behavior.
More than ever, Anima Eterna is both a witness to and an active participant in its time, ready to take on the new challenges of our society.
In the coming days, Anima Eterna and Pablo Heras-Casado, one of the guest music directors, will perform the original version of Bruckner’s 3rd Symphony, as well as works by Wagner and Mahler, in cities such as Besançon, Linz, Brugge, Lyon, Barcelona, and San Sebastián.

Le Conseil d’Administration d’Anima Eterna met fin à la collaboration avec son chef historique et ouvre une nouvelle phase de la refondation de l’Orchestre.
Le Conseil d’Administration d’Anima Eterna, orchestre sur instruments historiques fondé en 1987, a décidé de rompre la collaboration qu’il entretenait avec son chef historique, Jos van Immerseel, à compter du 16/09/2024.
Malgré plusieurs tentatives infructueuses pour permettre à Jos van Immerseel de poursuivre son aventure avec l’Orchestre et transmettre ses connaissances et son savoir-faire dans le respect de toutes et tous, le Conseil met fin à cette relation de travail en raison d’agissements agressifs répétés et de manquements réguliers à ses obligations contractuelles.
Après avoir porté aux côtés du Conseil d’Administration l’évolution artistique d’Anima, Jos van Immerseel s’en éloigne aujourd’hui. Quels que soient les désaccords, ils ne peuvent justifier un tel comportement moral et professionnel. Le Conseil d’Administration d’Anima Eterna a en effet particulièrement à cœur la mise en œuvre effective des valeurs de respect et de dignité dans le fonctionnement de l’institution.
Cette rupture acte la fin de la période de transition entamée il y a plus de cinq ans avec l’accord de Jos van Immerseel. Il avait alors décidé de passer progressivement la main en ouvrant l’orchestre à d’autres directeurs musicaux et projets fédérateurs, à même d’assurer l’avenir de l’Orchestre et la transmission des savoirs et expériences à une nouvelle génération.
L’influence musicale de Jos van Immerseel pour la pratique musicale historiquement informée reste considérable. Véritable pionnier de la redécouverte des répertoires romantiques jusqu’au début du XXe siècle sur instruments historiques, Jos van Immerseel a permis à Anima et ses musiciens d’être parmi les formations qui comptent en Europe et dans le monde. L’Orchestre est fier et reconnaissant de l’immense travail accompli sous sa direction musicale depuis bientôt 40 ans, comme en témoignent les si nombreux concerts et enregistrements primés, et souhaite faire vivre cet héritage.
Anima Eterna se refonde autour de ses musiciens, ses directeurs musicaux réunis depuis cinq ans autour de projets fédérateurs, avec un nouveau projet artistique et citoyen, à même d’assurer l’avenir de l’Orchestre et notamment la transmission de ce legs, des savoirs et expériences à une nouvelle génération.
Ce nouveau projet artistique et citoyen bientôt dévoilé est porté par des valeurs essentielles : celles de toujours, comme l’excellence artistique, le partage des connaissances, la place centrale de la recherche, le questionnement permanent des sources et pratiques loin de tout dogmatisme ; mais aussi celles qui constituent un orchestre du XXIe siècle et définissent son leadership artistique, celles de l’inclusivité, de la diversité, la place accordée à la jeunesse, et une éthique irréprochable du comportement.
Plus que jamais, Anima Eterna est témoin et acteur de son temps, prêt à relever les nouveaux défis de notre société.
Dans quelques jours, Anima Eterna et Pablo Heras-Casado, un des directeurs musicaux associés, donneront la version originale de la 3e symphonie de Bruckner, ainsi que des œuvres de Wagner et Mahler notamment à Besançon, Linz, Brugge, Lyon, Barcelona, San Sebastian. Dès à présent, Anima Eterna vous invite à découvrir son dernier enregistrement de la 4e symphonie de Bruckner sous la direction de Pablo Heras-Casado paru chez Harmonia Mundi le 13 septembre.
