Atelier Anima: Singing strings

In Atelier Anima: singing strings, Giovanni Antonini explores together with the principals of Anima Eterna, in preparation for the bel canto project with the entire orchestra that will premiere in January 2023. No better training ground than Rossini’s swirling Sonata a quattro. Written when Rossini was barely 12 and yet already completely steeped in the spirit of bel canto. Then again, in Luigi Boccherini’s sweet-voiced quintets, we hear the very beginning of what would later become bel canto.

Giovanni Antonini is one of the four conductors working with Anima Eterna in the coming seasons. He has a question, a quest, a dream: what did the real, historical bel canto of Rossini and Bellini sound like? Does their music perhaps sing differently from what we are used to today? For him, that question is not only about the singers – as you might think – but also about the instrumentalists. Can even the strings sing like the opera divas of the time?

With the intimate concert series Atelier Anima, Anima Eterna offers an exceptional glimpse into the orchestra’s workplace. Regular members of the orchestra perform chamber music based on the Anima repertoire, each time as a preview of larger orchestral projects. The historical instruments seem to have just rolled off the lathes, the scores dusted off for the first time in centuries. The musicians are happy to tell you all about it. Each time at original locations. Ears close to the instruments, imagination far beyond the horizon. Intimate, local, and intense.
