“ ... Another issue from the same source has a much more emphatic claim on our attention, not least because the performance is truly outstanding. The conductor is period-band specialist Jos van Immerseel, and his name alone may be enough to tell readers what to expect: with his Anima Eterna forces and a fine group of soloists on top form, soprano Lydia Teuscher, alto Marianne Beate Kielland, tenor Markus Schäfer and bass Harry van der Kamp, he delivers something very special – exciting, even. …“

“ ... The overall aesthetic from bare one is that of crystalline clarity: the bright, reedy timbre of the violins, performing each carefully shaped phrase with absolute precision; the crisp attack and quick decay of the drums; the exceptional purity, tuning, and addiction of the chorus. When the music slows, the effect is of radiant sunlight, pouring through a stained-glass window; when the tempo picks up, every note is clear as a bell, and every phrase conveys unity, intent and energy. …“

As with most of Haydn’s masses, the Missa Cellensis is more well known by its alias 'Cäcilienmesse or 'Cecilia Mass'. For quite some time now, Jos van Immerseel and his Ensemble Anima Eterna Brugge have enjoyed an outstanding reputation for presenting their unique and special type of historical performance practice. For the present recording they employed Vienna wind instruments and the string instruments are modeled on instruments from the Viennese classical period. In the unique acoustic setting of the Dresdner Frauenkirche their truly brilliant recording of the Missa Cellensis has initiated the Carus series of the complete masses of Joseph Haydn.
