Orchestra Anima Aeterna, Jos van Immerseel: Schubert Symphonies Compilation: Amazing, Alive, Tuneful, Just So Right

"... Immerseel and the band have positioned their general sense of Schubert, nearly perfectly. We can clearly hear the heritage of classical giants like Haydn or Mozart. We can also clearly hear emerging touches of Beethoven and later composers eventually to arrive on the European scene. The third menuetto movement of the third symphony on the first disc demonstrates this marvel of musical emphasis vividly. The overall sense of form is palpably classical, yet energy and tone colors strike our ears like rustic Beethoven and open air Schumann. Yet we are also never quite hearing Schubert as anybody but himself. Van Immerseel and company give it a rousing period instrument reading that fairly gushes with Late Romantic weight and color and drama. From the low string grip with which this symphony opens, to the famously magical melodies (mysteriously expressing both poignant restraint and high human drama); to the final notes which conclude two Schubert miracle movements worth more than four from many other composers; all the symphony's music is apt, so urgently conveyed. (...) Have we under-rated Schubert as an important symphonist for far too long? This van Immerseel set is surely among our best wake-up calls. Five stars."

In the early years, van Immerseel’s orchestra became widely known for its historical performance practice: the study of scores with an eye to textual reassessment and the use of original instruments in historically correct orchestration. This was music for connoisseurs who appreciated being offered new access to a repertoire they thought they were already familiar with. The fact that this audience has continued to grow over the past 25 years is not only thanks to the scientific rigour with which each project is approached, and the skill of the musicians and their director, but ultimately to what they produce: the music. Music full of life and surprises, during live performances and in the recordings. Enthusiastic praise from music-lovers has led to packed concert halls, award-winning releases and worldwide recognition.
