Joost Maegerman was born in 1978 and began his instrumental studies with the clarinet at the age of seven, starting the double bass at fifteen.
He has played with the European Union Youth Orchestra and the “Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester”.
In 2003 he received a master degree in music with distinction from the Conservatory of Antwerp. He continued his studies with a postgraduate course at the Conservatory of Geneva with professor Franco Petracchi and later at the “Musikhochschule” of Winterthur with professor Duncan McTier.
Joost Maegerman was principal double bass player with the “Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen” in France. He later became co-principal double bassist of the Flemish Radio Orchestra in Brussels. In 2007 he was appointed co-principal double bassist with Holland Symfonia in Amsterdam and has since 2008 become a member of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
Apart from this, Joost often plays with authentic orchestras and ensembles such as Il Fondamento, Anima Eterna and “Ensemble Explorations”.
Joost is in much demand as a chamber musician and has worked with many groups including the Oxalys Ensemble, “Het Collectief” and the Spiegel String Quartet.
He gives recitals with harpist Annelies Boodts and is also a member of the famous TREsBASSE double bass trio.
