Jani Sunnarborg has studied baroque and classical bassoons and dulcian at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Donna Agrell, classical and romantic bassoons at CESMD de Poitou-Charentes and the Paris Conservatoire with Marc Vallon, and the modern bassoon at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Jussi Särkkä.
Today Jani’s repertoire includes all different historical bassoons between 1600 and 1900
After 11 years abroad Jani lives at the moment in Helsinki and works essentially in France, Belgium and Finland with various ensembles. He features regularly with Les Musiciens du Louvre, Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, Anima Eterna, Cappriccio Stravagante, The new Dutch Academy, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra et Finnish Baroque Orchestra.
He is also often invited by Les Talens Lyriques, Freiburger Barockorchester, L’Orchestre des Champs Elysées amongst others.
As soloist Jani has appeared for example with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra performing Hummel’s Gran Concerto in 2008, Crusell’s Sinfonia concertante in 2007 and Vivaldi concerti with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra in 1999 and 2009.
Jani was a member of the late Halcyon piano and winds quintet, which was active in the Netherlands between 2000 and 2009. Halcyon won the young Artists Presentation in Antwerpen 2003 and got the third price in the International Van Wassenaer competition in The Hague 2004. At present Jani is member of the ZETES wind quintet based in Helsinki.
Next to his bassoon studies Jani has studied the organ at the Sibelius Academy with Folke Forsman and harpsichord and basso continuo in The Hague with Patrick Ayrton. One may catch him occasionnally performing on the oboe da caccia.
