Last season (2009/2010) Guy de Mey sung at Opéra national du Rhin, Strasbourg (Ariadne), at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Alice in Wonderland), the Flanders Opera (Onegin), at the Opera de Oviedo and returned to ROH Covent Garden to sing the part of “Guillot de Morfontaine” in Manon next to Anna Netrebko and Vittorio Grigolo and on tour to Japan under Antonio Pappano.
In 2011 he will appear at Bavarian State Opera as “Tanzmeister” ; make his comeback at Opéra du Rhin in the “Affaire Makropulos/Vitek”/direction Robert Carsen; appear in “Onegin/Triquet” at DNO Amsterdam, as well as in Munich and Lucerne under the baton of Mariss Jansons ; and make his debut at Frankfurt Opera in “L’Etoile” by Chabrier as ”Le Roi Ouf 1er”/direction David Alden. Future engagements includes parts such as “Monostatos”, “Valzacchi” and others in various European Opera houses.
Guy de Mey has made more than 50 recordings with reputated conductors (John Eliot Gardiner, Ton Koopman, Roger Norrington, Michel Corboz, William Christie, Jordi Savall, Nicholas McGegan, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski…). Several of these recordings were distinguished with international prizes (Grand Prix du Disque, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Caecilia Axard, Diapason d’Or).
Other highlights in his elaborate career are certainly his appearances in Mozart’s “Zauberflöte” and Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” under Roger Norrington at the London Proms and at the English National Opera; Lully’s “Atys” under William Christie at the Paris Opera, in Firenze and New York; Berg’s “Lulu” with Teresa Stratas in a production by Ruth Berghaus, and “Boris Godunov” with José Van Dam at the Brussels Opera La Monnaie; Händel’s “Judas Maccabaeus” with the San Francisco Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra; Bach’s “Matthäus Passion” with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam ; Berlioz’ “L’Enfance du Christ” at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence; Scarlatti’s “Mitridate” at the Schwetzinger Festspiele; Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande” at the Nantes Opera ; Berg’s “Lulu” and Janacek’s “The cunning little Vixen” and “Katja Kabanova” at the Flemish Opera (Antwerp/Ghent). Furthermore Guy de Mey appeared with major operas by Monteverdi and Cavalli at New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, Spoleto Festival USA/Charleston, Bavarian Opera as well as at the Operahouses of Paris and Copenhagen.
Guy de Mey is also well known as a lieder singer. He appeared in recital in Belgium a.o. at the Operas in Brussels and Antwerp, in Germany, France, the Netherlands, in Israel and the USA. Memorable were his interpretations of Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin” at the Franz Schubert Festival in Denmark and Schubert’s “Winterreise” at the Flanders Festival. Since 1995 Guy de Mey has been teaching at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp.
