Gunter Carlier received his education at the Brussels Conservatory of Music, the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (B) and the Hochschule für Musik in Köln (Germany).
In 1990 – 1991 he worked as a trombonist in the European Community Youth Orchestra during a concert tour in Eastern Europe playing in for example Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Berlin. He was selected as a trombone solo player for the Euro Youth Philharmonic Orchestra during his military service when he worked as a musician for the Belgian Navy Band in September 1991.
He is also the founder and inspirer of the BEAUX-ARTS BRASS QUINTET with whom he won numerous national and international prizes. After having been part of almost every
single Belgian symphonic and opera orchestra as a freelance-trombonist (a well-chosen and conscious decision) for many years, Gunter Carlier decided to concentrate on original
performance practice and period instruments. In this genre he is permanently attached to the symphonic orchestra ANIMA ETERNA (J. Van Immerseel), DE NEDERLANDSE BACHVERENIGING (the Netherlands) and the ENSEMBLE MATHEUS – Brest (France).
Moreover, he is a highly demanded and welcome guest in the ORCHESTRE DES CHAMPS ELYSÈES (Ph. Herreweghe) from France, which he toured and gave concerts with in Taiwan,
China, Singapore and Australia in October 2001 (among others).
This genre – specialization prompted him to co-found Triangolo vzw (a non-profit organization), it enables him to examine and practise a variety of performance practices and historical instruments. As part of Triangolo Gunter Carlier also organizes an annual music training in the Abbey of Groot-Bijgaarden (B) during the summer holidays, which has proved to be very successful indeed. As far as chamber music is concerned, Gunter was part of the ensemble LA CACCIA (with solely Alta-Capella instruments) for several years and played many concerts together with renowned ensembles such as CANTUS KÖLN (Germany) and CONCERTO PALATINO.
You can listen to Gunter Carlier on about 40 CD-recordings and he is the conductor of CONCERTBAND OORDEGEM (“excellence” division) and CARMINA CHAMBER-CHOIR from Meise.
Apart from his professional activities as a musician he is also the headmaster of the AKADEMIE VOOR MUZISCHE KUNSTEN MEISE (B).
